1248 : Pots, Pans And Fading Memories

Shops like R B Stead (Ironmongers) Ltd of Market Street, Heckmondwike are fast becoming an anachronism. A few decades ago they were the very building blocks of our small towns; treasure galleries of pots and pans, paints and pliers, padlocks and pins. Now they have become so rare that you stop in the street and photograph them, like some near extinct moth or a fading memory of yesterday.

Used to have one in the High St, but it's now a coffee bar (after being empty for several years). One left in the shopping precinct in Yate - as you say, everything. I think their slogan is; "If we haven't got it, you don't need it."

We call them hardware stores on this side of the pond. There's one here in Shippensburg right downtown called Pague & Fegan; they've been in business since the 1800s, and I think some of the merchandise is left over from that era.

We also have one of those, left over from the dark ages. Wonderful place for finding just what you need. Only the locals frequent it and we've been here long enough to be considered a local.
