A picture taken in Skegness back in the 1980s. Skegness used to have a slogan it would advertise itself with : "Skegness, It's So Bracing!" Rarely was a truer word said.

There is something about the tones, something about the feel of the photograph that says it is pre-digital. And indeed it is - freshly scanned from a strip of 35mm colour negatives taken back in 1991. That is Bangor in North Wales. That is summer. That is my past.

Back in the 1980s, this was the place where I would occasionally work. Whilst most of my teaching took place in the kind of concrete prefabs that passed for modern architecture in the 1960s, I would occasionally be called on to lecture at courses based at Wentworth Woodhouse which, for a brief period, formed part of Sheffield Hallam University. I must have taken this photograph on one such occasion. The Grade 1 listed 18th century mansion has the largest country house frontage in Europe. It was quite some place of work.

The curved one that dissects the image is the new, the ornate one that frames the bottom is the old. Both bridge the valley of the River Hebble in Halifax - Burdock Way is the new, North Bridge is the old. The picture was taken in the 1980s or early 1990s and has remained unprinted until today. Thus the old becomes the new.

When Roadworks Were Roadworks : 1980 (Alan Burnett)
I can date this old shot fairly accurately from the Clint Eastwood film showing at the Classic Cinema. I have a feeling that it was somewhere near Leicester Square but I am not too sure. They don't dig the roads like this any more : it is all mini mechanical diggers these days.
