Shopping Week : Life With Pies

The first day of Shopping Week and we are the North Yorkshire market town of Skipton. But the streets are quiet and, according to one shopkeeper we spoke to, "people just aren't buying". Not even buying, it would appear, the wares Drake & Macefield, National Pie Champions.

UPDATE 19.00hrs
In response to the request from Michael & Hanne, this is the best I can do without returning to Skipton

It does look quiet although I see traffic in the road ahead. I noticed a distinct lack of crowds in the supermarket today but that could have been due to the weather.

I love the perspective in this shot. Good work, Alan!

I guess you know of the Wigan kebab? 3 pies on a stick!

We need pictures of pies before we can order Alan. Show us what is in the window. Or was this an old photo?

Reminds me of a pub lunch I had with some walking friends. We all wanted black pudding with our mixed grills but there was only one piece left - so we divided it between 7 of us like it was a fine truffle or something!

Yorkshire is such an amazing place. Sorry to hear those wonderful small towns are having a hard time just as we are here in California. We all have to remember our local mom and pop stores. Some are hanging on a thread.

It's hard times all over -- but I'd sure like to try some black pudding. Is it like blood sausage?

Yes, small shops and businesses are struggling everywhere. Always very sad when a family run, traditional shop or pub goes this way. I try and do my bit by 'buying local' but it's not always easy. Not going as far as Yorkshire but will be up in the Peak District soon - can't wait.

The people seem to be less out and about these days. It's such a pity.
