Rats With Ostentatious Tails

I don't normally do wildlife photos : I have neither the skill, the patience nor the equipment, and so many of my on-line friends (and a Happy New Year to you Abe) are so good at it that my efforts pale into insignificance besides theirs. However this little chap (or perhaps, chappess) captured my camera's heart. I know they are nothing more than rats with ostentatious tails, I know that they ate all the native British varieties and then danced on their graves, I know they are garden pests ....but.  But this fellow (or fellowess) is welcome on my balcony any time.

I'm not sure why people are so obsessed with the red squirrel. A grey is just as beautiful.

Chairman : As my balcony-dwelling grey said only the other day "better dead than red"

Don't underestimate your photographic skills, Alan. I have three regular squirrels (yes, I know they're rats in semi-disguise) but I put up with their thieving in order to enjoy their profound cheek!

Awww...he is a cutie! Once our cats died we had several come live in our trees. They are fun, except they eat all the bird seed!

Ours mostly went south for the winter, the few we have left provide hours of entertainment for the dog:)

I had to laugh when I saw your title and picture...they are RODENTS for sure. They steal all my birdseed so I get mad at them, but they are so cute I forgive them right away.ha

They are pretty cute - this one looks like he's flinging a very choice comment your way!

Do you really want me to get rid of the post Alan?

M&H : No, leave the post - perfection has never been one of my attributes!

your remark reminds me of my father's favorite squirrel joke:

what is the difference btw rats and squirrels?

answer: the squirrels have better pr

for this mouse i like both rats and squirrels - both have a place and a certain charm! and both are very smart. when rats are not in their place and find their why into our places, then things get a bit icky!!

your friend has an interesting color variation to his coat.

the squirrels around my house are terribly spoiled. i admit to feeding them as much as the birds....with the squirrels i put out special squirrel treats, which helps minimize their stealing the birds food.

and as valerie said don't short change yourself...tis a lovely portrait!

I am very fond of squirrels; even when they are dangling upside down trying to steal the seed from my bird feeders.
