And The Band Played Whilst The Mill Burnt

The final two negatives on the strip of negatives which date back some 40 or 50 years are of a bandstand in a park. The great beauty of 35mm negatives were that they were stored in strips of six rather than individual negatives and therefore you can deduce things from the company they keep, so to speak. The bandstand I recognise, it is the one in People's Park Halifax. And therefore I must have walked by the mill fire on my way to or from the park. But there again it could have been another day, another walk, another country. Ah well, back to the drawing board.

It's an interesting way to track days gone by. By the way, I love the bandstand... how I wish they were still around.

this scene trigguered some childhood memories, as i remember going with my parents on summer days on the Mount-Royal, the mountain in the center of Montreal, and on the east flank of the mountain, there was a bandstand just like that playing music. it made for fond memories. thanx 4 the trigger!!

"Whils the Mill Burnt'; don't know that one, can you hum it?

I guess if the band could play while the Titanic sank, they're justified in playing while a mill burns. Heh, heh!

This is one of my most favorites of your wonderful black and white pictures.
The image of one man listening is priceless.
Happy weekend.

We think that is your father sitting on the front row. It must have been free or very costly to listen to the band; there are so few there. In Bath you have to live in town to get in free. We were visitors and had to pay to listen to the band.

I wonder if the bandstand is still there? They got rid of so many - and are now building them again!
