100226 : Watching The World Go By

I have no idea who these two people are. But they were there, just at the right time. And they were far too occupied with watching the world go by to bother whether I was infringing on their privacy by taking a photograph of them. The cruise companies all seem to have pictures of slim young things on the brochures advertising their holidays - but somehow this sums up what cruise holidays are all about. Relaxing and watching the world slowly drift by.

100225 Mangrove Forests

Still in Costa Rica, still exploring those coastal river estuaries looking for wildlife. We saw many different types of birds including some which, we we assured, were quite rare. But I was too busy looking to take up the camera and therefore you will have to believe me and look at this general picture of the mangrove forests instead.

100224 : Costa Rican Crocodiles

In Nicaragua we saw wonderfully carved and decorated wooden crocodiles. 24 hours later, in Costa Rica, we saw some more crocodiles, but these were not made of wood. This one is actually a small baby, but later that day we met his (or her) father. We were watching from the safety of a boat, making its way up one of the rivers near the Pacific coast.

100223 : Nicaraguan Wood

The end of the month is in site and I am still in Nicaragua. I have a feeling that my holiday photographs are going to extend into next month. Let me leave Nicaragua with this photograph of wood carvings on a street stall.

100222 : The Other Side Of The Bar

This picture was taken from the other side of the Bar featured in the last post. You can see the attractions it had to offer. Together with the hot sun and the massive crashing waves, it provided one of the great memorable moments of the holiday.

100220 : Bar In San Juan

Still in San Juan Del Sur, there were a series of bars adjacent to a wonderfully sandy beach. The contrast between the cool darkness of the bar and the intense heat of the wave-pounded beach where was extreme. Any sensible people would have ordered a cold beer in the bar. But it was January and less than a week before we had left the snow and ice behind us in Yorkshire. We headed for the sea.

100219 : Nicaraguan Hut

Don't ask me to explain why I took this shot or why I like it. I just do. I suppose it is something to do with the contrasts : contrasts of line direction, contrasts of colour, contrasts of shadow. There again that might have nothing to do with it. Best just not asking.

100218 : Nicaraguan Hammocks

Today we move on to the second port-of-call on our recent holiday which was San Juan Del Sur in Nicaragua. This is a photograph of a stall selling locally produced hammocks. Colourful, but hardly practical for damp West Yorkshire.

100217 : Big Boats, Little Boats

Positively the last of the Acapulco shots. This shows the contrast in the size of the boats afloat in Acapulco Bay.

100216 : Birds

Sometimes the photographs I finish up liking the best are ones which, when I took them, seemed nothing at all. It is proof that photography is - or at least should be - a two stage process : the framing in the viewfinder and the framing on the enlarger baseboard (or, in these days, framing in Photoshop).  There is something in this shot about the inter-relationship between movement and stillness, object and shadow, that I just like.

100215 Pacific Paddlers

Holidays are about more than just places. Much of the pleasure is in the company you keep. So here we all are, like so many other Yorkshire trippers, paddling in the sea. But this is Acapulco not Blackpool and the sea is the Pacific not the Irish Sea. (With thanks to the anonymous passing lady who volunteered to take this picture of all of us).

100214 : Happy Valentine's Day

I am taken a break from the series of holiday pictures to post a special one for Valentine's Day. The picture of me and Isobel (the GLW and the only valentine I have ever had) was taken in 1989 when she was pregnant with our son Alexander. We were taking a short break in London and it is one of the relatively few pictures of us together as I am normally on the other side of the lens. Happy Valentine's Day love.

100213 : The Somnolent Salesman

Still in Acapulco. There is a wonderful story about this image. Walking along I say this chap fast asleep at his flavoured water cart. I took the photo. I then watched as the policeman you can see approaching in the centre of the photo came up to the poor chap and started shaking him violently. He must have thought that the young man's somnolent pose was some kind of insult to the city. I am glad to say that when we walked past him again ten minutes later he was fast asleep again.

100212 : Pelicans

I always thought a Pelican was a particularly boring book until I went to Acapulco (If the Acapulco Tourist Authority would like to use this slogan they can as long as they pay me large amounts of money).

100211 : Apocalipsis

In addition to the colourful bars - and no John I never made it to the Frog Bar - the buses of Acapulco are a delight to behold. Each bus seems to have a name which is displayed far more prominently that the destination. Mind you, I dread to think where the Apocalipsis is heading for!

100210 : Famous Viewpoint

We were on an excursion in Acapulco. The coach stopped at a "famous viewpoint" which had wonderful vistas of Acapulco Bay. These were all very well but a bit "blue sea, yellow sand, blue sky" type of thing. When I turned the camera through an angle of 90 degrees there was a much more colourful vista on offer. I am going to turn this into a jig-saw puzzle, it would be perfect for the job.

100209 : That Acapulco Picture

Yes, it is that picture which everyone who ever goes to Acapulco comes away with. So why should I be any different?

100208 : Acapulco Beach

We got back from holiday on Saturday and returned to a land of rain, mists, snow and ice. I shall attempt to ignore the British climate for the rest of February by featuring just a few of the 700+ photographs I took whilst away. I know that other people's holiday snaps can be a little - what shall I say - "trying", but don't worry, there are only 21 days left in February. Today's picture was taken at the very beginning of the holiday, when we were in Acapulco, Mexico.
