I Have No Idea

This is a photograph I bought in a job lot of old photographs. I have no idea who the people are or when it was taken. I have no idea what was happening to them or what would happen to them. But look into his eyes. Is that pain, or fear, or perhaps a premonition? I have no idea. And I think I would rather not know.

An interesting one, and a few comments. It could be WW1 but usually the soldier would be in 'full fig' for a similar photo. The man has no belt, no hat, no collar badges and no rank stripes or insignia. The only give aways, and they don't show much detail even viewed large, are the buttons and the badge on his shoulder. Also, the trousers don't seem to go with the jacket, that could just be the photo. The only obvious thing is the bandolier of ammunition pouches. Could it be related to Ireland and the troubles? Interesting photo for someone to follow up.

Thanks John. I can't think of a more interesting follow-up than that.

I just thought foreign..perhaps he has just returned for a short time and found out he was a Father..that can shock some men! I love the old photos..they all told a story in their day:)

He seems distant to the two but looks the look of a guy wanting us to see the uniform. I think sadly he never helped raise the child.

Maybe it's just that shell-shocked look some first-time fathers get -- realizing all the responsibility he now must shoulder.
