091202 Union Cross Hotel

The Union Cross Hotel is the oldest pub in Halifax. Dating back to the sixteenth century, it was originally known as "The Cross" and it was named after the market cross which was to be found on the other side of the road. The "Union" label was added in the 18th century, at a time when the union between England and Scotland was under pressure from the Jacobite Rebellion.

Wow! I would stand in dererence to that little pub...soooo old!Makes me wonder about the inside also. Guess you are used to such aged antiquities in England. I have just finished reading about Halifax on Wikipedia Alan, and didn't realize how close I was to Halifax on my last trip.Yorkshire will be a bit far up from where I want to go next time, the south of England.I always enjoy reading about your interesting trips and adventures.

That looks like one of those places you feel like dropping in to on a cold December day for a pie & a pint.

I love all the history you offer to us, via your pics, Alan. What a dream it would be to be able to stay at the Union Cross Hotel one day. Like Pam, I also wonder about the inside. Nooks, crannies, secret rooms... all that.

Plenty of room to take your horse and cart up the side, I see - it looks a wonderful place.

I saw that picture of the face. I never was able to figure out how to do that.

I like this picture just as well. I bet there is a roaring fire in that place tonight.
