091114 Lamp Cleaning

Some years ago I became rather obsessed with the subject of lamp posts (I was somewhat eccentric back in those days). People still send me the occasional e-mail about the latest developments in lamp-post technology and I still take a proprietorial interest in the local lamp posts. Thus I was pleased yesterday to see one of my good friends getting a much-needed wash and brush up.

For whatever it is worth, here where I live in Brookville, Ohio, some years ago all of our street lights were converted over to mercury lamps (whatever that is besides an amber or violet colored light glow) and since then the lamps have never been cleaned. I assume they only climb the wooden poles to change the bulbs but I don't know of any burning out. These have a gadget on top that senses daylight and turns the lamps off. And at night when the lamps are on, if we have a good electrical storm with lightening, a lightening flash will trip the gadget and the lights go off only to come back on after a short period of time. Nearly everything here is mounted upon a wooden pole, we call "telephone poles," as they were originally shorter and smaller than electric power line poles. Nowadays I am not sure there is a difference but only a few steel or concrete poles are ever used.

I really do live in the old days in this town. We have one street light every other corner. So if you walk at night you can walk away from a light and two blocks later be under a light again. They have scattered that pattern so that if you are at a dark corner, you can see a light to your right or you left a few blocks away. I guess I need to watch out for interesting lights for you. We have reproductions lights up town so you think you are not in a very small town, but you are. Did you check out my Larry's Creative Zone?

Too funny! I have never given them any thought!
But now? When I see them, I will think of you!
